Walgreens Listed as Defendant

In Michigan, 70 plaintiffs have filed suit against companies that failed to warn them of risk of tardive dyskinesia, the neurological movement disorder side effect of Reglan.

In addition to the drug makers, Walgreens, the national drug store chain, is listed as a defendant. The plaintiffs say Walgreens should have provided notifications once their medication regimen exceeded 12 weeks, the maximum length of time one should be on Reglan.

Patients who take Reglan long-term (12 weeks or more) are at higher risk for developing tardive dyskinesia, a neurological disorder that causes involuntary movements, like tongue thrusting, grimacing, and rapid blinking.  There is no cure for tardive dyskinesia, and medications to help control the movements can be expensive.

A Closer Look at Tardive Dyskeinesia

One of the most harmful side effects of Reglan is Tardive Dyskeinesia (TD), a devastating disorder that merits a closer look. TD was first identified in 1964 and is primarily a result of exposure to certain types of prescription drugs, such as Reglan (or metoclopramide, as it is known generically.) Reglan is prescribed to treat gastrointestinal disorders like acid reflux, diabetic gastric stasis, nausea and heartburn. Elderly women, children and young adults seem to be at higher risk for developing TD if using Reglan. Tardive dyskinesia causes repetitive, involuntary movements, such as lip smacking, grimacing, rapid blinking,  tongue thrusting, jaw movements, lip puckering.  It can sometimes appear similar to Tourette’s syndrome. Diagnosis and treatment can be difficult. Symptoms can come and go, and there is no known cure for this disorder.  In some cases, doctors can help manage the TD, and lessen the involuntary movements, but it may never completely subside.

Reglan Lawsuits

Reglan, also known by the generic name, Metoclopramide has been widely perscribed to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as acid reflux, morning sickness and nausea. Use of of Reglan has also linked to severe movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia.

This side affect causes abnormal and involuntary movements, mostly involving the face, Common symptoms include facial grimacing, jaw swinging; tongue thrusting, and repetitive chewing.

Because of this damaging side affect many people across the United States have filed lawsuits against the makers of Reglan.

February 26, 2009, the FDA required that Reglan carry their strictest warning–a “black box” warning label on each package. The Black Box alerts patients that the prescription can cause life-threatening side effects. Tardive dyskinesia most commonly occurs in patients who have been taking Reglan for 12 weeks or more.

If treated early, victims of tardive dyskinesia maybe cured of the involuntary movements. But in some cases, people have stopped taking Reglan yet continue to experience involuntary movements and sometimes the condition worsens. No solid cure has been developed; treatment of patients with severe TD aims to reduce symptoms rather than eliminate them.

If you or a loved one have experienced complications from taking Reglan or Metoclopramid, you may be entitled to a compensation, and you should seek legal advice.
